Wool for Felting

We offer a wide variety of wool for felting and needle felting. You can create unique accessories, scarves, clothing, paintingsand others. You only need imagination and the right materials to bring your ideas to life.

Did You Know...?

Felt is one of the oldest materials for fabric production. It is believed to have existed for 800 years and was likely discovered when wool was placed in shoes for insulation. Wool was also used to make armor because of its strength and density.

Any wool can be turned into felt, but some types are easier to work with. It’s essential to work with carded wool that has been combed so that the fibers are aligned in the same direction.

Materials Needed:

  • Various colors of wool (for making one hat, you will need approximately 200 - 250 grams)
  • Bamboo mat (to wrap the felt in)
  • Wooden stick or rolling pin
  • Bubble wrap
  • Hand towels
  • Liquid soap
  • Empty plastic bottle
  • Large bowl
  • Rubber gloves
  • Distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar

Place the towel on the table. Cover it with the bamboo mat. Then place the bubble wrap with the textured side up—this increases the friction of the fibers. Fill the plastic bottle with water and liquid soap and dampen the bubble wrap (it should be slightly moist).

With dry hands, take the wool and pull out pieces of 30 - 40 cm. This way, create a square of wool, then repeat the procedure to make another square, but the fibers should be perpendicular to the previous ones.

You can combine colors as you like. You can also add silk fibers or beads. When using beads, you should place a thin layer of wool over them to create "pockets" that hold them, but to ensure they don’t fall out, it’s better to sew them onto the already made felt.

After you have finished the felt design, spray the wool with hot water. The wool should absorb the water well. If necessary, add more liquid soap. Press the wool to soak it better, but not with your hand, as the fibers will stick, and the design will be ruined. Do this with rubber gloves or a plastic bag.

Wool—The Rediscovered Material—Ancient as Humanity, Modern in Contemporary Times!

As part of the general trend of turning to natural materials, a very ancient material that has accompanied humanity since the dawn of its existence is triumphantly returning to our lives—wool!

This invaluable material, which sparked the Industrial Revolution 2-3 centuries ago is on the verge of gaining new, different fame—as a means of creative expression and uniqueness.

The techniques by which an amorphous heap of wool, composed of thousands of individual fibers, is transformed into fabric vary. The most familiar are weaving and knitting.

Another distinct and equally labor-intensive process of turning wool into fabric is made possible by the unique quality of wool fibers to felt together, through a process called felting, resulting in a very durable product, known as felt.

When we talk about felting, we mean only the material and products made from natural wool. In fact, "felt" in German or "felt" in English refers to both the process of creating products from wool and the products themselves. Felt products can be fabrics, rugs, panels, even paintings, or, as is fashionable to say now, in 3D format, that is, three-dimensional creations with utilitarian or purely artistic purposes.

Felt has experienced a surge in popularity worldwide in the last 10-15 years. There has been an incredible demand for felt products and their use as a creative material. Besides accessories like brooches, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, felt is used for scarves, bags, belts, hats, and more.

The clothing made with this technique—dresses, coats, capes—are incredibly original, and its derivative technique, nuno felting, is equally impressive. Each accessory or garment made in this way can be a wearable work of art, and the haute couture collections of many world-famous designers regularly include felt creations.

More recently, another technique in felting has been invented—needle felting, which is done with special needles. This is known as the dry technique, where the wool is not wetted, and felting is achieved by repeated needle movements that intertwine the wool fibers and create a single structure.

How to Wash Wool or Felt Clothes and Accessories?

If you have a garment or accessory made of pure wool, it is easy to care for because it doesn’t need frequent washing. Natural wool, which has not been subjected to aggressive industrial processing and has retained its structure and composition, has a self-cleaning ability.

Products made of pure 100% wool, without any other fibers, even after being worn for many days, very rarely absorb body odors, and if they do, it is only partially.

That’s why they are preferred by professional mountaineers, climbers, and athletes who spend long periods in extreme conditions. If it does absorb some odors, you can leave the wool product to air out in fresh air, and it will have a fresh scent in just a few hours.

With few exceptions, felt and knitted wool products should be hand-washed only! Do not experiment with machine washing. The results are usually very disappointing.

When needed, especially with physical dirt, you can carefully wash it in cold or lukewarm water up to 30 degrees, with only water. Wash by gently squeezing the fabric with your hands.

Do not twist! Do not scrub!

Amazing Felt Creations

So, what wonders can we make with felt by combining techniques, showing a bit of imagination and ingenuity:

 Warm Winter Slippers

The slippers, as well as the traditional Russian "boots" made of felt, are made using a mold. The felting technique is used, and the wool is wrapped around the mold. Decorations can also be made with this technique.

Phone Case

Make pieces of felt that resemble a sheet of paper in shape. From them, you can easily cut a template the size of your phone and sew it with needle and thread. Add decorations of your choice.

Realistic Animals

Two techniques can be used to make an entire wool animal. The clothes and other accessories can be knitted with one or two needles.

 Dolls

Make beautiful dolls using pieces of felt, usually available in A4 paper size. Use cotton or rags for stuffing and buttons for the eyes. You’ll also need a needle and thread to sew the doll and give it the look you want.
