The Origin of Cotton
Cotton is a valuable fiber. It consists of a collection of soft, fluffy fibers composed of 94% cellulose.
It is harvested from the seed pod of a perennial shrub.
Today, the plant is most widely grown in Mexico, Australia, and Africa.
In Bulgaria, cotton gained widespread popularity in the mid-19th century.
After the Liberation, the areas sown with cotton reached 30,000 decares, gradually increasing to 340,000.
Due to the drastic reduction of the textile industry in Bulgaria in the 1990s, the cultivation of this fiber plant significantly decreased.
Today, cotton sowing is concentrated in Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, and Haskovo.

There are several types of cotton, depending on where the plant is grown and its characteristics.
- Upland Cotton
Upland cotton is the most widespread type. It originates from Central America and Mexico.
- Creole or Egyptian – grown in South America
- Tree Cotton – grown in India and Pakistan.
- Mediterranean – common in the Arabian Peninsula and Africa.

- Yarns
Yarn consists of long, continuous strands or fibers. It can consist of one or several types of threads.
Different types of fibers are mixed in production, as each has its advantages.
Synthetic fibers are more durable, while natural fibers are more skin-friendly.
Yarn is used in the textile industry for weaving, sewing, knitting, and embroidery.
- Textiles
Textile is a collective term for all products made by weaving, knitting, or pressing various artificial, natural or synthetic fibers.
- Artificial Silk
- Filters and Windings for Electric Motors
- Oil
