History of Canvases and Drawing Bases
Over the centuries, artists have painted on various surfaces depending on what they had at hand.
The first surfaces used for painting were ordinary panels made of hardwood, most often oak. An interesting fact is that the paintings created on such surfaces are the ones that have stood the test of time, continuing to look as if they were painted yesterday.
The next popular surface among artists after wood was vellum made from young calfskin. It was very expensive but light-resistant and highly valued material.
In the 16th century, canvas made from linen and hemp was introduced. The first canvases made from these materials were very thick and heavy and were made from the same material used to make ship sails.
These canvases dominated the market until the 19th century, when duck canvas (a type of cotton fabric) appeared and became the most preferred by all artists. This canvas was much cheaper than linen, easy to stretch, and when properly made, resembled linen. Thanks to technology and the mechanical loom, the production of this canvas became very economical.
Despite this, only professional artists who sold their works used it, as only they could justify its cost.
Meanwhile, all other hobbyists created on bed sheets. Unfortunately, none of the artworks created on them have survived because the material rotted due to the oil in the paints.
Even today, duck canvas, used since the 1900s, is still in use, with the difference being that there is now a variety of canvas sizes and shapes.
Types of Canvases for Painting
There are many types of canvases and drawing bases, but we will present the most common and well-known ones.
- Rectangular or Square – these are the most common types of canvases, available in many different sizes;
- Shaped Canvases – these include all special shapes like hexagonal, heart-shaped, triangular, elongated, oval, and round. They are used for specific purposes;
- Mini Canvases – these are set on mini easels and are usually used for creating miniature artworks;
- Triptych – these canvases allow you to create a series of artworks that stand next to each other;
Application and Purpose
The applications of canvases and drawing bases are countless, ranging from hobby purposes to more professional uses like oil and acrylic painting, icon painting, and mixed media projects.
Canvases and drawing bases are ideal for both professional artists and hobbyists. You can easily paint on them with
A Few Words About Painting Materials
- Acrylic Paints – they are characterized by having very strong and dense pigment and, if not diluted, have very bright colors. When dry, they darken slightly and form a waterproof layer of paint that can only be removed with strong organic solvents.
- Oil Paints – if you use oil paints for your artwork, make sure to stock up on several packs of white paint, as it is the most commonly used. You will also need a thinner and pieces of cotton cloth to clean your brushes.
When the painting is ready and the drying process begins, it is good to keep it upright, in a well-ventilated room, and avoid touching it, as oil paint needs about 10 days to dry completely (depending on the number of layers applied).
- Tempera Paints – when working with tempera paints, to achieve an additional gloss effect and facilitate spreading the paint with the
brush on the canvas, you can apply a very thin layer of linseed oil. As it dries very slowly, it is crucial to use a minimal amount of it. Initially, it is quite liquid, then it becomes sticky, and finally, it hardens quickly.
- Watercolor Paints – The technique for painting with watercolor paints offers unlimited possibilities for combining colors, depicting shapes and volumes, and applying the paint. The most characteristic technique is velatura – where transparent colored spots are painted and layered on top of each other to create spaces, volumes, and shadows.
Other ways to paint with watercolor include:
- the contrast between the water-blurred spots and the precisely drawn contours;
- painting on dry and wet paper;
- creating color spots of varying density;
- blending shades;
- painting on different papers with different brushes;
- drawing the final details with a dry brush.
